
Scientists from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, have created a weight loss program based on clinical research and experience that they say will help people lose kilos and stay permanently.
Dr. Donald Hensrud, an expert in clinical diets and coauthor of “The Mayo Clinic Diet” commented to Reuters about why the program is so effective, in which study is based and what makes it different from other diet books.
Q: Why did the Mayo Clinic published a book on dieting?
A: For several reasons. The first and most obvious is that during the last decades the weight and obesity have become more of a problem in this country and around the world. Therefore there is a necessity.
Secondly, many others have been promoting for years some calls from the Mayo Clinic diet, but until now there has never been a diet book from the Mayo Clinic.
Thirdly we believe that now is a good time. There is much scientific evidence of things we put in the book, based on research and evidence we have gathered here (…) We believe we have a program that is effective, healthy, enjoyable and sustainable long term.
Q: What difference has your diet the rest of the numerous diet books?
A: There are some unique features on the diet of the Mayo Clinic. It is more than a diet. It is a program for lifestyle change. It is divided into two phases. The phase “lose it” lasts two weeks and believe it is the healthiest way to lose weight quickly.
This leads to an ex-live it. Once people see what they are capable of moving these habits into a lifestyle change over time. Another unique feature is the food pyramid based on energy density for a healthy weight at the Mayo Clinic.
Q: How important is exercise in your program?
A: It’s a great component, it should be. This seemingly simple equation comes down to calories burned versus calories. And energy expenditure, exercise is very important (…) Exercise is the most important way to burn calories.
Q: The book is effective for someone who wants to lose 9 kilos or 90 kilos?
A: Yes it is. Its principles apply to everyone. It must be recognized, and that is in the medical literature, that the greater is the original weight, people can lose more weight initially but has a long way to go.
